THE FARM HOUSE

THE SITE

Brook Hall Farm is an extensive farmhouse occupying a hillside location within the picturesque agrarian landscape defining the Suffolk/Essex border.

THE BRIEF

Originally from Denmark, the owners envisioned imbuing the property with a Mediterranean ambiance that would beautifully complement the character of the Essex farmhouse, seeking to create an alluring garden that transported them to sun-drenched Mediterranean landscapes while incorporating a selection of their cherished antiques, including cathedral mullions and a splendid Italian well.

DESIGN DETAILS

Accommodating the existing slope, a series of elegant and individually unique terraces were created.  These tiers are defined at their ends by sculpted organic land art, lovingly referred to as ‘earth moons’ by Tom. The carefully curated planting scheme characterising each terrace forms a seamless organic transition from the more formal environs of the house to the wilder beauty of wildflower meadow and orchard.  The existing pond was extended to encompass the house, creating a moated threshold which adds a sense of enchantment and drama. Marginal and aquatic planting enhances this extended water feature, enriching its ecological biodiversity value and visual appeal.
