Contemporary Garden Design

Hawkedon House is a stunning Victorian Gothic style former rectory nestled in the picturesque countryside near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. This architectural gem, dating back to the late 1850s, graces the rolling landscape of rural Suffolk and offers stunning views of unhindered arable land adorned with majestic ancient oaks. The story of Hawkedon House takes a fascinating turn with its new owners, who were determined to transform the cluttered garden into a harmonious and minimalist oasis that would seamlessly connect with the house. Their vision was to embrace clean lines, with a contemporary garden design, and minimalism while capitalising on the breathtaking vistas that surround the property.

The transformation of the garden at house began with a meticulous and thoughtful design process.

Designing and planning the contemporary garden landscape

Thomas Hoblyn, took inspiration from the natural terrain and topography of the grounds. A clay terrain model of the property was created to serve as the canvas for the garden’s transformation. The result was a series of terraces that elegantly graduated away from the house, connecting the swimming pool to the house, and offering a succession of stunning vistas.

The choice of materials for the terraces was a key element in realising the vision of a contemporary yet harmonious design that complements the house’s brick and flint exterior. These carefully selected materials not only enhance the architectural beauty of the house but also provide a seamless transition from the interior to the outdoor spaces.

One of the defining features of the Hawkedon House’s contemporary garden is its minimalist planting scheme , which draws inspiration from the natural landscape of Suffolk. Grassy areas, punctuated with meticulously sculpted topiary, reflect the aesthetic of the surrounding countryside, where round-headed ancient trees and expansive grasslands create a sense of timeless beauty and serenity.

The garden at Hawkedon House serves as an extension of the residence, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living spaces. It is a place where the clean lines of contemporary garden design harmonises with the timeless beauty of the Suffolk countryside, creating an oasis of tranquillity and elegance.

Hawkedon House’s garden, masterfully designed by Tom, is a testament to the transformative power of thoughtful and visionary design.
